Apple boasts portable gaming leadership, launches Game Center for iPod Touch

Claiming leadership in the videogame industry is no easy feat (especially after joining it only two years ago), but Apple CEO Steve Jobs did anything but mince his words at the launch of the new iPod range today.

Speaking at Apple’s press conference in San Francisco, Jobs claimed the iPod Touch and iPhone range of devices has “50%+ the marketshare for portable game players in the U.S. and worldwide,” and boasted over 1.5 billion downloads of “games and entertainment titles” since the launch of the iTunes App Store. According to Jobs, this makes it “the number one portable game player” on the market.

Although it is debatable whether iOS is actually a viable videogame platform, Apple is making concerted effort to validate its position to serious gamers by announcing the multiplayer-centric Game Center for iPod Touch. The service works in a similar way to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, where players can connect with others across gaming sessions, buy DLC, earn achievements and check out leaderboard ranks.

Initially announced at the iPhone 4 press conference back in July, Game Center will be bundled with the new iOS 4.1; meaning that all iPods and iPhones capable of running the firmware update will support the service when it’s released next week.

The new iPod Touch will be available from next week starting at 9 (£189). The iOS 4.1 firmware update featuring the new Game Center app will be free for supported devices.

Treyarch confirms post-launch Black Ops mod support

Adding to things that win over PC gamers, like the inclusion of dedicated servers for online play, developer Treyarch has confirmed that they will indeed be offering mod support for their upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The news was delivered on the game’s official forums where a Treyarch developer posting as pcdev confirmed that the shooter will be opened up for modding “sometime post-launch.”

There will be some limitations though, limitations the studio itself is not yet fully aware of: “We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game. There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm.”

But that’s all post-launch hullabaloo. For now, the studio remains “completely focused on finishing the game,” the developer added.

Black Ops launches worldwide on November 9th.

Madden’s Facebook Offering Discovered

We’ve known since February that a Madden branded Facebook game was in the works. In the time since FIFA Superstars launched on Facebook and became an instant success. Companies have found the free-to-play but microtransaction/ad-supported games to be extremely lucrative. Consider especially that they have the potential to reach the hundreds of millions that actively use the social networking site as compared to more restrictive console user bases.

Bitmob came across, just by random circumstance, a maintenance page that featured the game which will be known as “Madden Superstars”. Given the name it would seem reasonable to expect a similar structure to the FIFA version which is based on building up team rosters and competitng in the mold of a management sim.

EA Sports has yet to announce when to expect “Madden Superstars” to launch though it would be surprising if it didn’t officially roll-out in advance of the NFL regular season. Some of the credit for FIFA Superstars getting out to such a big start was the interest in the World Cup. EA would certainly want to capitalize on the excitement heading into the NFL season.
