Undead Labs: Class 3 is the “platform” for Class 4
Fri, Mar 04, 2011 | 04:52 GMT
Undead Labs’ Jeff Strain has said the first of the studio’s two zombie games will act as prequel and “platform” to the second.

Speaking to Massively, Strain explained that Class 3, the code name for a recently revealed Xbox Live Arcade open world survival horror game, is in some ways the same project as its planned massively multiplayer follow up, Class 4.
“Class 3 is designed to be a fun game in its own right,” he said. “It’s not a massively multiplayer game with six thousand hours’ worth of playtime. What we hope to do with it is bring players into the game, and from there, let them have a voice in how we shape Class 4.
“By creating this contained experience, we’re really going to flesh out our goals for the game and identify those areas where we need input from the community in terms of how we’re going to turn it into a full-scale online world. Part of what we hope to accomplish is to make sure that those channels are in place so that people can guide and direct us as we move on to Class 4.”
After commenting that Class 3 would “certainly” be a prequel to Class 4, Strain said the latter is being “developed simultaneously” with the former.

Trion says RIFT doesn’t need 10 million subs to be successful
Fri, Feb 25, 2011 | 20:00 GMT
Will Cook, Trion Worlds’ lead dynamic content designer on RIFT, has said in an interview that the MMORPG doesn’t need 10 million subscribers to be successful.

Speaking with Strategy Informer, Cook said catering to the game’s community is more important than going after a large sub base.
“It’s been six years since WoW, and we’ve not even seen a pretender to the throne,” he said. “I think people are coming to realize that… for us we don’t need 10 million subscriptions, we just need enough.
“We just want to value our community. The beta was about testing how quickly we could respond to what THEY were doing, or what THEY were asking for.”

Sony has reportedly advertised two positions as part of the development of an anti-piracy program.

Gamasutra spotted the listings on SCE America’s recruitment site; the specific ads have since been removed.
Both listings called for successful applicants to work together with Sony marketing, product and business development in “developing and implementing an anti-piracy program” with “a strong strategic online component”.
The first sought a senior corporate counsel with “deep knowledge of trademark and copyright law” and “knowledge of online investigative practices, online databases, anti-piracy and DMCA tracker products and services”.
A second aimed to recruit a senior paralegal.

Blizzard talks new MMO, says it’s “new and fresh,” not like WoW
Fri, Feb 11, 2011 | 05:01 GMT
World of Warcraft is great and all, but come on: it’s been more than six years. At this point, you’d probably be willing to play a Big Rigs: Over the Road racing MMO. At least it’d be different.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, though, isn’t going to leave you high and dry. As he put it: “To break the mold, sometimes you have to start over.”

“We’re really trying to leverage all the lessons we learned through the years. Some of which we were able to address in ‘World of WarCraft’ and others that maybe because of the design decisions we’ve made, you just can’t address. So we’re kind of taking a step back with all that knowledge to make something that’s completely new and fresh. We’re not trying to make a ‘WoW’ sequel,” he said while speaking in Las Vegas (via Ars Technica).
The new game, then, won’t rise from WoW’s ashes. Both games will instead share the spotlight – an incredibly frightening prospect if you consider how much of your life one Blizzard MMO can already consume.
