Netflix Abandons Plans to Deliver Game Rentals

Netflix has dropped their projected plan to consist of video game rentals alongside their DVD and Bluray house delivery. When the business was planning on branching into two entities, with Netflix handling online streaming and the now-deceased Qwikster delivering house delivery, the idea of offering video games to buyers was also on the table.

CEO Reed Hastings announced the abandonment of the strategy for the duration of a conference call attended by investors and tech blog Engadget.

Street Fighter X Tekken X Reality Show

As if blending the worlds of Street Fighter and Tekken weren’t odd enough, Capcom has taken things to the subsequent level by framing the game in a reality series. Capcom has teamed up with IPLAYWINNER and TEAM SPOOKY to create Cross Assault, a live reality show for Street Figher x Tekken.

Players from the community will be chosen through video blog to compete in this tournament for a grand prize of $ 25,000. There isn’t in fact any mention of playing video games in the release, but it does mention that, “Five players will be chosen for every team, all competing in a series of skill-based challenges surrounding Street Fighter x Tekken,” and that “being dope at boogie boarding or jump roping wont support you right here.”

Sorry Hot Dog USA, but it looks like you are far better off going house to be a household man/woman whilst the pros attempt-out for the competitors here.

Guild Wars 2 Beta Testing to Start This Spring

ArenaNet welcomed Guild Wars two fans to the Year of the Dragon with some outstanding news: ArenaNet president Mike O’Brien announced in a blog post that Guild Wars 2 will begin beta testing this spring.

O’Brien stated that the closed pals-and-family members beta phase of the widely praised MMO has lately been completed. Starting February, ArenaNet will permit choose press to participate in beta testing. O’Brien mentioned that the quantity of players allowed into beta testing will “aggressively ramp up” in size throughout March and April.

Though the release date of the game has but to be announced, it’s a secure bet to say it will not be too lengthy soon after the beta, most most likely in June, although it depends on the depth of the beta, which we currently do not know.

Sal’s Blog: Now Playing and the VGAs

I haven’t done one of these in a while. Super sorry! Especially considering some people have been asking for one. I’ve just been a bit in the busy seat, lately. I figured tonight would be a good night to do one, what with the Video Game Awards just passed and all. So here it is – a blog.

What I’ve Been Playing

I’m still playing Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. I’ve beaten it once on Hard and am still working through it on Crushing. I believe I’m on either Chapter 10 or 11 right now (the first chapter in Syria), and have about 70 percent of the trophies completed. I’m going for the Platinum, just as I did with Uncharted 2 (these games are too good not to!). Hoping to finish it soon so I can jump into Batman: Arkham City, then Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, then the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection… I have a list, man. Hoping to get in some insane game time before the end of the year. I’d like to finish at least the three titles I mentioned. But those games alone probably add up to over 60 hours of playtime.

The Video Game Awards

I don’t like the Video Game Awards. It doesn’t really feel like an awards show, at all. I mean, what did they give out, like five awards? How much time did the developers get to speak when they did? Like one minute in a two hour show? It needs less celebrities (sorry Jason Biggs and Sean William Scott, but as much as I liked your misadventures in American Pie, you’re irrelevant here), less “humor” (if that’s what you want to call it), less terrible scripting, and less unenjoyable skits (I understand it was for charity, Felicia Day, but you could’ve at least made it entertaining to watch – and less corny).

When Zachary Levi (the host) said that anyone who spent too much time on stage during their acceptance speech would get teabagged, I already knew the show was going downhill from there.

Here’s what you can do, Spike TV, to make your awards show just a tad more credible:

Get a host well known to the gamer community. Actors and actresses host the Grammy Awards – developers, or even favored execs, should host the Video Game Awards (everyone loves Jack Tretton).
Pretend, for just two measly hours, that it’s an award show. Present every award. Give developers their respect and time to talk. A lot of us would like to hear what have to say.
Stop bringing out guests like Will.I.Am, LL Cool Jay, and Brooklyn Decker to reveal games and present awards. Let’s see Todd Howard, Evan Wells, Mark Rein, Ed Boon, and other notable game industry figures do the honors.
Add a niche or Japanese game category. Companies like NIS America, Xseed, and Aksys survive only by their fans. It wouldn’t hurt to give their games some publicity and help them earn a few more.
~~If you’re going to allow any criticism from a previous year to be broadcasted to your show, pick something, you know, worth mentioning.~~ Actually, don’t do that at all. Just make your show better and don’t pull time from the devs. It’s their night.

The best part of the show this year was Shigeru Miyamoto’s accepting of their legendary hall of fame award. That, followed by Kojima’s constant apologizing (you gotta love that man). And guess what? They were both developer moments – not a Felicia Day skit, not a Zachary Levi social gamers crack, and not a rant from some guy who likes Zelda.

Give the developers some respect. Give them an awards show they deserve.

David Jaffe made a blog post today about developers lying, like Platinum with Metal Gear Solid: Rising, or Jaffe himself with Twisted Metal. You should read it.

We posted two PlayStation Vita previews this weekend: Escape Plan and Gravity Rush. You should read them. The Gravity Rush preview has a lengthy gameplay video, and offers the opportunity to get in some questions for the game’s creator.

Team Ninja ‘considering’ Ninja Gaiden Sigma 3

If you were planning on picking up Ninja Gaiden 3 next year, you may want to hold back a bit. During an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi said the studio may consider releasing a Sigma version of the threequel following release.

“Sigma is kind of a sister game to the Ninja Gaiden series, and after releasing NG3, we may consider releasing a Sigma game for it,” said Hayashi.

MLB 12: The Show to Feature Revamped Commentary and Broadcast Presentation

Outside of its consistently poor online play and slow load times the MLB: The Show series has taken the most criticism as of late over its somewhat stale commentary and uninspired presentation. According to a new blog posting from SCEA both of those areas will be seeing significant improvements in MLB 12: The Show.

Other areas touched on include more use for PlayStation Move, brand new ball physics, and a new online mode. Really the problem with online isn’t the absence of modes – it’s the lack of options within those modes, lag, and its effect on results – so touting new modes isn’t going to be successful in eliciting much excitement until the base experience improves.

The trend towards more authentic television broadcast presentation, which this year really accelerated with NBA 2K12 and Madden NFL 12 in particular, will continue with an attempt being made to deliver a more true-to-life viewing perspective. The commentary sounds as though the company is going for the style found in the NBA 2K and MLB 2K series where announcers will reference and provide better perspective on events at a given time which should in effect provide a dynamic feel.
