For reasons that I find difficult to fathom, Official Nintendo Magazine tends to post Nintendo related articles now and again; and one of their most recent posts picks up on something in the latest interview that will serve to reinforce the popular opinion that Nintendo is more caring and dedicated to quality than most other videogame companies. That something is: a sellable version of Skyward Sword could have hit shelves in time for last Christmas, but it wouldn’t have been the polished-to-a-blinding-degree product that we now have.

“If we’d only been thinking about what was most convenient for the company when we made this new game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we probably would have put a half-finished product on sale last Christmas by saying that we have managed to make it on time just because it was the order from the company.” said Miyamoto.

“If I had said last Christmas, ‘We need something to be our big end of the year product. Make a new Legend of Zelda game,’ you would have made some sort of game. Because you would have spent as much time as you had and put in as much energy as you could to make it.” growled Iwata, fire in his eyes (maybe).

It’s hard to decide what’s more surprising; that the main Skyward Sword game was put together in just six months, or that the same amount of time was spent sharpening and polishing the experience. Miyamoto explains: “We spent six months making the game, and another six months fine-tuning it. Because the game we were making was so huge, we needed to work that hard on it. Otherwise it would have felt like a waste. We spent so much time making a really good game and it came out so well that it would have been a waste not to make sure that it was really polished.”

Last October, Valve finally revealed that they had been, in truth, working on a sequel to the “Warcraft 3″ mod, “Defense of the Ancients.” Based on what’s been discussed so far, it sounds like most of the modifications among “DotA” and “DotA two” are in Valve’s graphical improvements over the original, no cost mod. Meanwhile, throughout Blizzard’s BlizzCon 2010, the company announced that “Blizzard DotA” was an internally created “StarCraft two” mod, built employing that game’s map editor. Whilst “DotA two” had a presence for the duration of GamesCom last week, it sounds like Blizzard are going back to the drawing board on “Blizzard DotA.”

The entire “Defense of the Ancients” scenario is a bit weird. If you’ve in no way played, the original mod is essentially a tower-defense title, but consists of much deeper character development and customization than what is usually seen in the genre. Given that the title was an off-shoot of “Warcraft three,” created by Blizzard, it makes total sense that Blizzard may well be involved with the franchise going forward. Effectively, that isn’t exactly what happened.

The original “DotA” mod was much more or much less developed by the community, and as such, belonged to said community. Sadly for those involved in the project, that also meant that there really wasn’t much in the way of a legal trademark out there, which left the door open for Valve to secure the name “DotA.” Some of the principal contributors to the project, who have considering that moved on to Riot Games and designed “League of Legends,” had been less than thrilled.

Regardless, Blizzard has maintained more than the last year that they were working on their own “DotA” mod, to be released sometime about the upcoming “Heart of the Swarm” expansion for “StarCraft 2.” Speaking to EuroGamer, Blizzard lead designer Jonny Ebbert has stated that the mod has been “completely rebooted.” He discussed some of the challenges the team has faced with the mod, and discussed the new approach.

“Getting it proper and just meeting the Blizzard high quality bar, and questioning a lot of the assumptions behind the genre, which is what we do at Blizzard,” Ebbert mentioned. “What we showed at the original BlizzCon, we’ve fully flattened it considering that then and completely rebooted it simply because we just thought, there’s more we can question on this.”

Ebbert also stated that the team is hoping to make the game accessible to newcomers. There is however not significantly else to share at the moment, but it is very likely we’ll hear far more about the “DotA” mod when BlizzCon 2011 goes live later this year.

Several members of the GoozerNation editorial staff got together to discuss the biggest disappointments from last year. Here now, are their thoughts on which video games bit the dust.

Erik Kubik:

2010 was a good year and a bad year for games. Looking back at some of the games which gamers could have done without included Medal of Honor and Fable III. But the worse was Kane and Lynch 2, which was terrible; I have to say it was worse than the first game. It had a short story, uninteresting characters and crummy multiplayer. By now Kane and Lynch 2 should have fallen into the $ 20 or less value bin; but even if it did I would still pass on it.

Medal of Honor could have been a revival of the series. Instead, EA gave the game a modern feel, which made it very similar to CoD. MoH just felt like it had been done before. At least if EA had stuck with the World War II theme it would have been different from all the other FPS games currently on the market.

I had high hopes for Fable III. It could have been great but everything that made Fable II amazing was removed from the game. Add in a slightly confusing story and a lame ending and gamers were left in a rut. For the most part it seems even the biggest fans are having issues finishing Fable III.

Brock Poulsen:

It seemed foolproof, and maybe that was the downfall of Dark Void: your character, voiced by none other than Nolan “Nathan Drake” North, finds a jetpack invented by Nikolai Tesla, and uses it to blow up aliens. I anticipated a blend of high-flying dogfights and action-packed shooting. Instead what we got were fairly competent flying sections and rubbish non-flying parts. The jetpack allows the transition from airplane-style flying to hovering in midair, allowing the player to use more powerful guns, then switch back to the jetpack-mounted machine guns. The flying parts were admittedly enjoyable enough, but they were mixed with on-foot gameplay featuring a semi-wretched cover system, awkward controls, and cookie-cutter bad guys. The “vertical cover” system that was supposed to revolutionize the industry turned out to be a glorified hopscotch system that simply made for less-good cover-based shooting that used up and down instead of forward and backward, with less freedom. Overall the game just feels somewhat sloppy and unfinished.

And then there’s the escort mission. The first time I can remember rage-quitting a game was Dark Void’s escort mission. The advantage of having a jetpack becomes moot when everyone else has a jetpack, and thus can attack you (and the helpless idiot you’re tasked with protecting) from every conceivable angle. I tried everything I could think of to keep him alive, from flying ahead to trying to force him into cover to using my own body to physically shield him from bullets, but all to no avail. He was doomed from the start. And so was Dark Void.

Honorable mention: Valkyria Chronicles II. Not because it was bad, but because its PS3 predecessor was so good and the sequel was exclusive to the PSP. That is a disappointment in my book.

Cole Burton:

Every year there is a huge selection of games for all sorts of players. It is terrible when hyped games fall on their face, but even worse is when one of your favorite movie series takes your money and screws you over…two years in a row.

SAW 2: Flesh and Blood did this to us Saw fans. With the movies now being wrapped up, we must pray they slash these video games. Then, I won’t have to force myself to play anymore of Jigsaw’s messed up games. I feel like I’d rather be put in one of his traps from the movies…

I could also spend time ranting about other games, the ones that stand out the most are Kane and Lynch 2 and Fable III, but I don’t have much to add on to what Erik Kubik said. Here’s to 2011, may games pass on the disappointments, and savor the golden glory games.

Craig Will:

There isn’t much that is more disappointing than playing a game that does not live up to it’s hype. Especially if it’s a game that has had a lot of fans waiting for a long time just to get their hands on it. As an RPG nut and a long time Final Fantasy fanboy, my *biggest* disappointment of 2010 is fairly obvious: Final Fantasy XIII. After putting around 16 hours into it I just couldn’t do it anymore. I know, I know, it gets good after the 20-hour mark. Well I didn’t feel like wasting 4 more hours of my life just to have a game hit it’s payoff for another 10 hours. Why not just jump into a 10-hour game that’s rewarding the whole way through?

Two more games that didn’t quite hit the mark for me were actually pretty similar games in that they used the God of War formula without being as entertaining as God of War: Darksiders and Dante’s Inferno. At least Darksiders incorporated other borrowed gameplay styles (Zelda) and had a fairly interesting storyline. Dante’s Inferno had me so excited, because I love the literature, but left me sadly disappointed.

I’m not sure if this counts because I didn’t actually play it until earlier this year, but Red Dead Redemption just didn’t do it for me. Admittedly I wasn’t expecting much out of it when it first came out but after all the praise it received and assurances that, “No, it’s not just GTA on a horse, it’s a lot more.” I was able to muster some interest and higher expectations. Just not a game for me.

I know this list is getting long but I have one more disappointment for 2010: Alpha Protocol. I already mentioned that I love RPGs and Fallout 3 is my favorite game this generation and quite possibly of all time, so I was understandably excited when somebody else, Sega (huge fanboy) and Obsidian (KOTOR II), decided to have a go at a gun RPG mixed with Splinter Cell elements. While I was able to squeeze some joy out of it, it wasn’t anywhere the game I’d hoped it would be.

Ryan:

Guess game wise, it wasn’t too disappointing a year for me. However, tech-wise, I had a few. Like I really started noticing the shrinking fonts I discuss in my recent article here on GoozerNation this last year. Also, I think the intensity of game stories was a bit overwhelming. I remember having Batman: AA, RDR, Transformers: WFC, Ghostbusters, and Castlevania SotN (Digital Download) all at once thanks to Goozex and birthdays, and it felt tiring to choose what to play! I had to dedicate myself to a game for weeks on end since I barely got any game time. I’m loving FF13, but haven’t played it in months. Lastly, I was disappointed in all of the generic game styles. I’m not a FPS person by and large (biggest joy in that is Goldeneye), but so many of them mesh together today, and it seems if they want some extra bucks, to just throw zombies in it. I am disappointed in how companies are catering to the almighty dollar instead of the joy of the game.

Troy:

When I wrote the favorable review for Fable III for GoozerNation, I had logged more than 20 hours with the game and felt that I had a pretty good idea of what to expect with the game. I posted the review and thought nothing more. Then I completed the game. I was horrified. The broken breadcrumb trail, the ability to only impress/communicate with more than one person at a time were definitely strange design decisions, but nothing compared to the biggest, baddest design decision of them all: Fable III’s conclusion. Fable III’s ending is a lot like all of my elementary school book reports and projects. For the first three-quarters, I gave about 75% of my potential — remember this is school, nobody actually gave 110% except the nerds — but when it came to the final-third, that motivation took a leap out the window. It was the king of all rush-jobs. Usually, a game’s disappointing conclusion is because the storyline actually sucks, or the boss battle is too easy (or too difficult). With Fable III, what we got was the promise of a two-hour movie, but at the hour and 30 minute mark, the conclusion appeared and said, “Sorry folks, the show is over a bit earlier than expected!”

I also really disliked Final Fantasy XIII. It was a gorgeous game but I hated the characters and the game itself required a lot of time and effort before its extremely narrow and linear nature opened up. While I may not have played all of the Final Fantasy games, I recognized its influence across the industry and understood why gamers loved the series so much. Gamers have always joked about the irony of the name Final Fantasy, and how despite its finality it has continued for more than 13 “finales”. After playing Final Fantasy XIII, I really began to think that maybe it really was time to put an end to the franchise. FFXIII stood out as the out-of-touch giant, who reveled in its own greatness. While it stayed true to itself, it ultimately failed when compared to other modern and more innovative designs.

Amy:

I thought 2010 was a great year, with tons of games to delight fans of every genre. Not much to complain about. Nope. Oh, wait. There was that one thing. Those of you who have been reading for a while might remember the GoozerNation review of Metroid: Other M. I took a lot of heat for rating it a 2 out of 5, but I stand by that score, and by my assertion that it was pretty much awful.

I can just hear the steam coming out of the ears of all the die-hard Metroid fans out there, but I think a game has to stand on its own. Ask yourselves this: would you like it if it wasn’t Metroid? Nope, most people bought this game purely for the Metroid name, and talked themselves into liking it for the same reason. One of the most ridiculous things I have heard about this game, and still hear often, is that if you play it through twice it is much better. Really? I’m supposed to devote several play-throughs to a game before I can expect quality? I don’t think so.

Mike:

The big disappointment for me last year was Crackdown 2. I don’t why I allowed myself to get hyped up for it. Sure, I enjoyed the first Crackdown, it was a fun romp through a city, climbing buildings, collecting orbs, blowing stuff up… what’s not to like? So, when Crackdown 2 came along and my brother said he was going to buy it, I decided to give it a review. It was basically the same game as the first one, with some new twists and changes, but ultimately, it was the same game. Except for one major thing: the difficulty level was ramped up to 11. I understand the game was meant for multiplayer, and when my bro and I played together, we could basically walk through the game. But at times when I played solo, and I had to go deep into a cavern to activate the satellite thing, I would get clobbered. Even if I set the difficulty to the easy level, I would get clobbered while trying to secure parts of the town. I had to resort to collecting orbs and climbing and gliding to have any semblance of fun. Crackdown 2 is one of those extremely rare games that I never finished, which is the reason why it was easy for me to pick it as my most disappointing game of 2010.

I see a few of the contributors wrote about Fable III and Medal of Honor as being disappointing. I guess I went into those games with low expectations and that’s why I wasn’t disappointed by them. I kinda thought the campaign for Medal of Honor was fun. I thought Fable III was a competent game, and perhaps I didn’t mind the ending as I was just happy that it was over, but I did have fun playing it.

What were your biggest disappointments of 2010? Do you disagree with any of the games listed here?

Enterbrain, the publisher behind revered Japanese gaming publication Famitsu have revealed that for the first time since their release the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS have been outsold by Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Sony’s PlayStation Portable.

Enterbrain also revealed that Sony’s Playstation Portable was the best selling games platform in Japan during 2010 by shifting an incredible 2,640,499 units. However the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii by a margin of less than 10,000 consoles.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Guns of Icarus
“We’re giving indies the chance to sell you, the fans, on their studios and products. This week we talk with Howard Tsao, Founder of MuseGames, about his steampunk airship title Guns of Icarus.”

Wired.com: Games Work ‘Neurological Magic,’ Says QWOP Creator
“Bennett Foddy, deputy director of the Institute for Science and Ethics at Oxford University, makes games about embodiment, and the ‘neurological magic’ in gaming which allows us to inhabit the heroes on screen. But unlike most artsy, experimental games with a point to make, Foddy’s free Flash games are hilarious, alarmingly addictive and eminently playable.”

The Great Gatsby: The Great Gatsby for NES Soundtrack (audio)
“We’ve been thrilled by the response to Gatsby, so as a bonus, we’ve uploaded the original soundtrack for free download at Last.fm. If you like it, be sure to check out some of its influences: Billie Holiday’s early tune ‘It’s Like Reaching for the Moon,’ Chopin’s Nocturnes, and of course, the classic soundtracks of Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, et al.”

Matt Chat: Interview with Agustín Cordes (video)
“This is the first installment of my extensive interview with Agustín Cordes, designer of the award-winning Scratches and the upcoming Asylum. In this episode, Cordes and I discuss Asylum, the engine formerly known as Kinesis, Scratches, horror, indie development, puzzle design, and plenty of other topics. Cordes also gives me several scoops, preview footage, and exclusive insider information.”

Mobcast: Indie developers speak out (audio)
“In this week’s indie-themed episode of the Mobcast, Area 5′s Matt Chandronait, Cryptic Sea’s Alex Austin, and Runt Inc.’s Richard Horne join Bitmob’s Brett Bates. The crew discusses their most anticipated indie titles, how consoles limit creativity and distribution, what consumers look for in a non-mainstream game, and whether the term ‘indie’ indicates a genre or a design method.”

distractionware: Games of 2010
“Better late than never. Here’s a selection of games released in 2010 which I absolutely loved. They’re all amazing games and I recommend you check out as many of them as you can.”

1UP.com: 101 Free Games 2011
“Times are tough and the unemployment rate keeps rising, but maybe it’s some consolation that the increasing scarcity of cash money doesn’t mean you can’t get your gaming fix. Free games just keep on rolling in, to the point that this twice-yearly feature can’t actually begin to encompass them all. Nevertheless, we’ve tried to condense them down to the 101 best of the last half year or so.”

That’s about as many numbers it’s possible to stuff into a headline. Codemasters have announced that F1 2011 will be coming out this September, and Steam is offering F1 2010 at 50% off this weekend.

F1 2011 will be released on September 23 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, with versions for 3DS and NGP in development. Codemasters say the game will feature “wide-ranging technical and gameplay advancements on and off track and vastly extended competitive and co-operative multiplayer components.”

They’re also offering fans the chance to “star in future Development Diary videos.” All the information you need to enter this competition is on the game’s Facebook page.

On a similar note, F1 2010 has gone on sale for 50% off on Steam this weekend, no doubt hoping to cash in on the Australian Grand Prix this weekend which begins the new F1 season.

Despite a complete lack of the letters “V” or “G” in the acronym, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has been recognizing excellence in video games since 1998. Although BAFTA is much easier to say than BAFTVGA.

Either way, at an award ceremony yesterday, the prestigious academy handed out statues of shiny gold faces to the best of the best in video games for 2010.

Although there may have been a distinct lack of skanky psuedo-celebs or awkward Neil Patrick Harris joke deliveries, there was no shortage of praise going to some very familiar titles this year.

Taking home the BAFTA Fellowship prize was Lionhead Studios top man, Peter Molyneux. The Fellowship award is akin to a lifetime achievement award. It’s a huge honor for anyone to have bestowed upon them, and in winning, Molyneux joins the likes of Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who won the award last year.

Have a look at the winners:

As for the game awards themselves, there are a couple of surprises and notable winners in there. For example, mobile phone game Cut the Rope was able to prevail over handheld heavy-hitters like God of War: Ghost of Sparta and Professor Layton and the Lost Future (UK Title). Kinect Sports managed to top other Kinect favorites like Dance Central and Kinect Adventures for its prize. Also somewhat of a surprise, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit’s multiplayer was able to get the best of Ezio and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’s much talked about unique multiplayer mode. And while Mass Effect 2 took home the Best Game prize, it was Heavy Rain that walked away with three total awards.

There are also a few notable absences on the list as well. Indie sensation Limbo wasn’t able to grab any wins, despite being nominated in five categories. Call of Duty: Black Ops did manage to win the GAME Award, a fan-voted category, but failed to receive anything from the academy.

Finally, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is probably the biggest omission from the list. In fact, it didn’t even receive any nominations, except for in the GAME category, despite taking home the top prize at the VGAs. It turns out that the game’s mysterious absence isn’t so mysterious. BAFTA only nominates games that have been submitted for consideration, and Rockstar failed to submit Red Dead Redemption. While there are no concrete explanations as to why they wouldn’t throw their critically acclaimed western into the ring, it has been suggested that Rockstar is still a little irked by the fact that Grand Theft Auto IV failed to take home any BAFTA awards in 2009 and might just be acting stubborn.

How does the list of winners look to the Game Rant crowd? Are there any surprises, or does this look like a pretty good assessment of the last year in gaming?

You can check out the full list of nominees at the BAFTA website.

Tied for 1: I AM LOVE and I’M STILL HERE

My two favorite movie posters of 2010 – one for one of my favorite films of the year, the other for a film that I didn’t even see (not from lack of desire, though Casey Affleck’s opening weekend fess-up dampened my enthusiasm somewhat), and a perfect pair.

I have a lot of affection for the simple movie poster that places perfectly chosen type on a beautiful film still, but these are something else. For one thing, their images are portraits rather than film stills (Tilda Swinton at her most elegant, Joaquin Phoenix at his most studiously disheveled), and for another, the title treatments are given equal billing to the image, seemingly fighting with it, potentially overwhelming it, ultimately embracing it. It’s nice to see serif and script fonts being used so stylishly in the age of sans-serif minimalism; I only wish I Am Love didn’t have to devote so much real estate to the billing block, something I’m Still Here dispenses with entirely (instead crediting the designers and photographer). I Am Love was designed by The Refinery, I’m Still Here by the great Kellerhouse, who also designed my favorite poster of 2009.

3. BLACK SWAN
The most talked about and blogged about movie posters of the year were a series of four limited edition illustrated teaser screen prints for Black Swan, created by UK designers LaBoca. They are brilliant and there is not much more to say about them other than that I wish I owned a set. This was my favorite of the four, the design that best captures the sinister transformations and malevolent couplings of the film itself.

4. THE EXPENDABLES
Sylvester Stallone’s all-star tough guy revue The Expendables (a left-field favorite of some of the MUBI team) boasted the usual slew of character posters and ensemble posters (IMP Awards has 22 different designs), none of which were anything special, but this beautifully illustrated Mexican poster is in a league of its own.

5-7. THE AMERICAN; AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE and CARLOS
The revenge of monochrome. Though it isn’t perfect, the poster for The American was nevertheless a sight for sore eyes in multiplexes this summer (it was definitely the only one of the posters in my list that I saw on subway platforms). Sam Smith’s similarly retro poster for Carlos takes up the ’60s action movie gauntlet thrown down by The American and comes up with something more authentic, which I’m proud to know Movie Poster of the Week had something to do with. And, included not just because these three posters look so perfect together, the duotone poster for Steven Soderbergh’s Spalding Gray doc And Everything is Going Fine is a masterpiece of simplicity. As a matter of fact, it would also work really well posted next to…

8. FISH TANK
The Australian poster for Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, (another of my favorite films of the year) designed by Jeremy Saunders (he of the Antichrist scissors), is the one Fish Tank poster that gets it right, conveying both Katie Jarvis’s exuberance and her council flat confinement. And Jarvis really looks as if she is floating in a tank of water. (If only Criterion had used Saunders’ design instead of this). It also has one of the best solutions to excessive type (quotes, awards, taglines, credits galore) that I have seen for a while (and dig the shadows which continue the floating effect). Saunders’ design for The Parking Lot Movie can also be seen in the runners-up below.

9. SWEETGRASS
Did I mention my love of perfectly-chosen type on a beautiful film still? This might be the nicest example I saw all year. Come back Helvetica (Neue Ultra Light), all is forgiven.

10. ENTER THE VOID
From minimalism to maximalism. I didn’t truly appreciate this poster until I saw the film, but now I know how perfectly it conveys its garish neon-hued universe and its vertiginous omniscience. I’m not even sure how this poster was made. Is it photography, is it illustration? I also love the multi-font credit block running down the side of the poster (the very same credits which strobe by during the opening of the film itself). For full effect, see it in detail.

Feel free to disagree (what, no Inception?) but below are the rest of my Top 40 movie posters of 2010, in no particular order other than a very deliberate aesthetic one. Happy New Year to all.
