FIFA 11 to tackle online quitters by rewarding players that finish games

It’s the perfect Saturday. You’re rocking your team’s jersey as you settle onto the couch, a Shasta in one hand, bag of Fritos in the other, preparing to hit the pitch in FIFA 10. You head online, get yourself into a match and suddenly you’re up one-nil. And then, just as suddenly, your opponent quits. You go bananas, hurling your controller into the TV. Then your wife comes in and says she’s had enough and takes the kids to her mother’s. A month later, you’re divorced.
It’s a story we hear way too often here at Joystiq. Thankfully, EA is working on a way to punish these quitters — outside of rectifying the fact that they’ve wrecked your life forever — in the next series iteration, FIFA 11. EA Canada’s Simon Humber told Eurogamer these “rage quitters” are a “complex problem.” See, there’s a loophole in the game that allows players to quit within five minutes of starting a FIFA 10 match online, in case there’s a connection issue — but EA is looking for ways to keep players from exploiting that feature.
Humber says that EA is thinking about adding functionality to FIFA 11 that would reward players for finishing matches, rather than try to punish those that quit. As for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa, don’t expect any changes: “We haven’t done anything different for this game as far as I know,” Humber said.

Microsoft ‘actively working’ to restore Original Xbox DLC

Earlier today we reported that Original Xbox downloadable content had been taken offline, presumably in an early effort to turn off online support for the classic Xbox; however, according to Microsoft the unavailable DLC is only an error.
In an email to Joystiq, a Microsoft representative said: “We are aware that Xbox v1 users are currently unable to access downloadable content via Xbox LIVE, both for the original console and Xbox Originals on Xbox 360. The team is actively working on resolving this issue so that the Xbox v1 community can continue downloading content until April 15.”
No time frame was given for a fix to the disconnected servers, but it looks like Microsoft wants gamers to enjoy every element of the original Xbox’s connected experience until April 15. Now we can all go back to ignoring these server shutdowns and stop acting like it’s such a big deal. You know, because it’s 2010.

Activision: Singularity, Transformers: War for Cybertron due in May 2010

After narrowly escaping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‘s impact crater in late 2009, Raven Software’s tardy, time-bending first-person shooter, Singularity, finally appears to have settled on a new ETA. Speaking in an investor conference call following the release of the company’s latest financial results, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith mentioned that both Singularity and star vehicle / vehicle star Transformers: War for Cybertron were due some time in May 2010.
If neither of those appeal to you, Shrek Forever After: The Game is also set to release during the same month. But … really? You don’t like transforming robots or time-distorting techno-gloves? What if the robots were wearing the gloves?

Xbox Live Marketplace Feb. schedule includes $10 Battlefield 1943 [update]
Update: Microsoft has issued a correction on this schedule. The Misadventures of P. B. Winterbottom will be priced at 800
($10), not 1200
($15).
Major Nelson has a dropped a partial February schedule for Xbox Live Marketplace content, including a particularly nice Deal of the Week. Specifically, next week’s deal, beginning February 15, will be Battlefield 1943 for only 800
($10). If you’ve yet to pick up the game, $10 is definitely a good price. Also starting next week, both Resident Evil 5 and Beautiful Katamari will hit the Games on Demand service.
The post also notes that this week marks the end of the second season of 1 vs 100. Tonight’s episode (9:00pm ET/6:00 pm PT) will feature Magda Apanowicz from SyFy’s series Caprica. For the season finale this Friday (10:00pm ET/7:00 pm PT), the game will feature 343 Industries’ Frank O’Connor and Bungie’s Marty O’Donnell.

Riccitiello reckons console price cuts came too late

Yesterday’s EA earnings call was packed with tidbits about upcoming games but, as reported by VG247, there was time for some minor mudslinging as well. During the call, EA CEO John Riccitiello was asked about industry health and tie ratios, and said “I think a… factor in 2009 was sort of a lack of aggressive pricing on first-party if you will, a little bit too late with their price-cuts.”
He later added that console use was actually up, even in the face of social gaming platforms like Facebook. So, think what you will about Riccy’s stance on price cut timing, the one thing that’s certain is that we‘re not to blame.

Xbox Live deals of the week: Turtles, Tiger and Marvel vs. Capcom

We’re guessing that the person at Microsoft whose job it is to choose the discounted XBLA games of the week is a huge New Orleans Saints fan. Filled with the overwhelming spirit of victory from last night’s engagement, this person couldn’t stop him or herself from repeatedly hitting the price reduction button. We’re afraid of what might have happened if they were a diehard Colts fan. Can XBLA prices be increased?
Fortunately, things panned out in our favor. During the discounting spree, three titles got their prices reduced: Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is now 800
($10, down from 1200
), TMNT: Turtles in Time Reshelled is 400
($5, down from 800
) and Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is available for 800
($10, down from 1200
). Basically, if you’ve got an itch to watch ninjas or superheroes beat the snot out of things, Xbox Live has you covered for the next seven days.
