Sony says not publishing Demon’s Souls themselves in the west was “a mistake”

demons souls1 Sony says not publishing Demon’s Souls themselves in the west was “a mistake”

One of the more surprising sleeper hits from the last few years was Demon’s Souls. The From Software-developed RPG proved that word of mouth is still the most effective form of advertising, as its punishing difficulty and decidedly hardcore sensibilities made the game a media darling, which in turn led to big sales and big financial gains for Atlus USA.

All of this is great news unless you happen to be Sony, who was the Japanese publisher but decided against publishing the game in the west. Apparently Sony thinks that was a pretty bad call too, as during a GDC panel discussing localizations, Sony representative Yeonkyung Kim called passing the buck to Atlus “a mistake” and said the RPG “should have come out as a first-party title.”

Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, but after playing the game, I could see how someone at Sony probably thought it wasn’t going to be the success it turned out to be.

Sony studios keen on 3D gaming, lots of them working on compatible titles

sony logo Sony studios keen on 3D gaming, lots of them working on compatible titles

Sony have been perhaps the strongest supporter of the recent rise in 3D technology, which they made clear at this year’s CES. Seems like their enthusiasm has carried on over to their PlayStation development teams as Ian Bickerstaff, senior engineer with SCE’s UK-based stereoscopic 3D team suggests. When asked how many teams were currently working on 3D projects, he told Gamasutra: “It’s all a bit confidential, but a lot, let’s put it that way. We’ve been amazed by the enthusiasm from the developers.”

Promising words that also come with a hint of caution, “We’re not going to spend crazy, crazy amounts of money [on 3D games] expecting everyone tomorrow to have 3D TVs, clearly. But, we believe this is the future, and three or four years from now, you won’t be able to buy a television that doesn’t have a 3D capability.”

Sony are set to release 3D-enabled Bravia TVs this Summer, how well 3D gaming performs basically depends entirely on how well these TVs perform.

mlb2k100315 MLB 2K10 Patch Now Available for 360

The patch for MLB 2K10 has gone live on the Xbox 360 and the prompt to download will be presented when starting up the game. The most high profile changes that arrive with this patch include the addition of check swings, adjustments to manager AI on pulling pitchers, and fixing of the problem that has been preventing online ranked games from being played. Unfortunately it appears the PS3 version is being neglected as 2K Sports is unwilling to commit to a patch and may be planning to roll the changes seen in this first patch in with a second patch down the line.

For the detailed list of what the patch is delivering click here. After playing the game with the patch applied make sure to leave your thoughts on it in the comments!

Demon’s Souls leads Atlus USA to huge gains

demons souls 01 Demon’s Souls leads Atlus USA to huge gains

Thanks to strong performances by both their flagship and new intellectual properties, publisher Atlus USA has posted massive gains.

According to a Siliconera report, the North American wing of the Japanese firm made 378 million yen (approx $4.15 million) in operating profit for the first half of their financial year. That’s up a staggering 236.1% compared to the equivalent period last year.

The stats from the previous quarter are even more impressive. Here operating profits were up 578.5%, with Atlus USA racking up a cool 346 million yen ($3.81 million). Good showings for Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, and (relative) surprise-hit Demon’s Souls are being attributed to the success. 101-in-1 Party Megamix is being mentioned too, but we’re putting our fingers in our ears and pretending it’s the good games that bring the money in.
