DICE may get back behind the wheel

Swedish developer DICE is by far best known for its Battlefield series, but they also have a history in racing games; something they may try their hand at again in the future.
When recently asked if the studio misses working on racers, producer Patrick Bach said, “Yes, racing games are very close to our hearts and something that I think DICE would do really well if we put our focus on it,” adding, “We’ll see if the future gives us an opportunity to return to that genre.”
As for the studio’s already-in-development projects, Bach said that something non-Battlefield is in the works, “We are always exploring new and cool genres … DICE is not only working on Battlefield games right now.”
One of those hush-hush projects is believed to be Mirror’s Edge 2 which has been talked about openly since last summer. But that may not be all — as executive producer Karl-Magnus Trodesson said just last month, the company is actively looking into “other projects and other games that perhaps can turn into IPs and then later on franchises.”

Tretton on PS3: we’ve only “just scratched the surface”

God of War III is mere weeks away; and it looks good… really, really, really good. Fantastic even. But, according to Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton, developers “are still just starting to harness [the PlayStation 3],” ultimately making it tricky to fathom what the future holds in store for the system.
“You’re just starting to see games like Little Big Planet, Uncharted 2, and Final Fantasy XIII, that are really taking advantage of the technology,” says Tretton, “but we’ve clearly just scratched the surface in the PS3.” As a result, Tretton goes onto mention, we won’t see a PlayStation 4 until “somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we’re able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it.”
This so called ‘ten-year cycle’ is definitely good news for my bank account and any future Christmas lists.
New Zelda this year, Nintendo appears to confirm

Nintendo’s media summits went down this week, bringing with them 2010 release dates for Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M and Monster Hunter Tri, among others. The Legend of Zelda series, however, was nowhere to be seen.
But wait! Don’t give up hope yet, because Nintendo’s Cammie Dunaway has suggested that the new Zelda game will be released for Wii this year and, as already known, that we’ll get to see it — and maybe even play — at E3.
Speaking to Wired, the Nintendo of America executive vice president said, “One of the things that’s true for Nintendo is that we’re not driven by a calendar for our release dates. When the games are ready to go, when the quality is perfect, that’s when we release.”
“We all benefit if we can keep a pretty steady pace, so the development teams have worked hard to make sure that we’ve got a full lineup this year. If you compare the first half of 2010 with the first half of 2009, it’s night and day. And from some of the things that Mr. Iwata has talked about, and that we will talk about at E3, like Zelda, you know that we’re going to have a good back half of the year, as well.”
Mario, Metroid and Zelda all in one year? Doesn’t get much better than that.
