Ubisoft wants to release sequels every 12-18 months

Ubisoft is borrowing the Activision sequel factory strategy with plans to release sequels of their popular titles every 12-18 months. Ubisoft’s European managing director, Alain Corre, detailed their sequel-churning plans.
“We’re organising ourselves towards that strategy – providing you can create something innovative every year that can surprise the end user and please your gamers,” Corre said. “Then you can consider releasing a SKU every 12-18 months – but it needs to be different enough from the previous SKU to make sure you’re not tiring the franchise or the consumers.”
Corre used the Call of Duty franchise to illustrate his point. “The Call of Duty example is the best around – they’ve been able over the past five years to iterate every year with growing success each time. They never compromise on quality, which is exactly what we’re trying to do with our brands now.”
Interestingly, Corre refers to James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game and its strict work schedule mandated by the movie industry which had a hand in its tepid critical and commercial reception. “It was true that we were also hoping to create a better experience, I’d say, in terms of gaming – but it’s not always easy when you have to follow the rules of a studio,” he said. “When you have guidelines and so on, it’s more rigid in terms of creation than what you can do with your own property.”
More DS successor rumors surface

The previous DS successor rumors have received reinforcements; According to sources of French site Gamekult, several game studios have already received their dev kits for the new Nintendo device. Nothing is clarified beyond that, though the new handheld is allegedly heading to store shelves before the year’s out.
Nintendo has openly admitted that they have new hardware in the works in the recent past, and there are several suitable events coming up where it could make an announcement of this magnitude — E3 in June, Game Developers Conference in March, and even their very own Media Summit next Wednesday.
Nothing to do now but play the waiting game, then. EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich seems certain the new handheld will be out in the next 15 months though.
7 days around the MMO world / February 14

Let us first start off by giving all the gamer couples, couples comprised of half gamer and all the rest who might be reading this MMO update, Happy Valentines Day! If you’re celebrating this hallmark holiday we wish much love from wherever you may be visiting us from. Now that we have all that sappy pink and candy laced v-day crap behind us, let us jump into the reason you’re actually here.
In one of our previous MMO updates we mentioned that Cryptic was working on what they’re calling an “expansion” for Champions Online. We also mentioned that it seemed more like a standard content update than it did a full expansion and that they were looking to charge players to gain access to this new content. Well it looks like the community uproar has caught the attention of Cryptic and now the update will be 100% free.
The content update has been titled Revelations and is due out sometime mid-March. The contents haven’t changed so players can expect new zones, new powers, new rewards and bigger challenges.

Sticking with the superhero theme, it looks like Cryptic’s old game City of Heroes has an update of its own coming our way. The Issue 17 update for City of Heroes will open up some of the features coming in the full expansion Going Rogue a bit early. Players will be able to get access to Ultra Mode — which is a significant graphical overhaul of the whole game — and the new powersets prior to the expansions release through Issue 17.
