Roses are Red, Turians are Blue…

Well, it’s getting to be that time of year again: Valentine’s Day. The flowers… the chocolates… the undeniable feeling that you’re being robbed… it all comes together to create a truly unique holiday that really should not exist. Now a full decade into the 21st century, some are worried that their precious day of romance is becoming too commercialized. It’s not about the gifts, the spending, or the delicious February 13th break-up tears – it’s about the love.

And thanks to Bioware’s latest and greatest masterpiece, Mass Effect 2, you don’t even need a boyfriend or girlfriend in order to get your romance on. Sure, the critically acclaimed sequel doesn’t have the steamy, raunchy, “look at that side-boob!” sex scenes like it’s predecessor had, but it’s still got lots of lovin’ for all the romantic gamers out there. Here’s a list of potential partners that Commander Shepard could be doing the horizontal mambo with, if, you know, you want a break from saving the galaxy, or something.

Miranda Lawson:

Let’s start off with Miranda, the genetically enhanced Cerberus officer with a heart of gold, and a trunk full of junk. I’m sure 90% of the guys playing the game will attempt to get it on with Miranda, and with good reason. She’s voiced and modeled after the gorgeous Yvonne Strahovski, and has an air of confidence about her that is just out of this world (get it!?). When chatting it up with Miranda, make sure to continuously mention that she is more than just a genetically modified sex soldier. Don’t worry, she can’t tell that you’re lying – Project Natal isn’t out yet.

Molyneux not sure if Fable III is an RPG anymore

fable iii Molyneux not sure if Fable III is an RPG anymore

Microsoft’s end-year exclusive RPG Fable III may not even really be an RPG, Peter Molyneux said while speaking at Microsoft’s X10 event in San Francisco last night. “I’m not sure I even call Fable an RPG anymore. Certainly not a 1990s RPG, for sure,” the MGS Europe creative director said.

It was revealed yesterday that Fable III is getting a number of changes from its predecessors. There’s no HUD for one; when the player is in danger then the coloring of the screen changes, similar to Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare 2. The expression system has also been replaced with a touch mechanic that allows the player to interact with other characters by holding hands, hugging, shaking etc.

“In a way, you could look at it and say it’s like an action adventure. There’s a lot of drama, there a lot of story, there’s a lot of emotion in there – but with levelling up. I love that levelling up,” he said, adding that being given a pre-planned character and told ‘this is you no matter what’ is not to his liking.

Yesterday’s event also brought forth the first screenshots and in-game footage from the not-quite-an-RPG-anymore.

Final Fantasy XIII and Splinter Cell: Conviction Xbox 360 bundles on the way

final fantasy xiii console Final Fantasy XIII and Splinter Cell: Conviction Xbox 360 bundles on the way

If the impending release of Final Fantasy XIII or Splinter Cell: Conviction is edging you towards laying down the dough for an Xbox 360, you might be in luck. Microsoft have conveniently got two new Xbox 360 bundles lined up to coincide with the releases of each game.

Expected to retail for $399, each bundle will contain a 250GB Xbox 360, a copy of the respective game, two wireless controllers and all the usual trimmings: a wired headset, an ethernet cable and an AV cable. However, should you pick up the Final Fantasy variant, you’ll also be privy to some exclusive avatar items to adorn your digital self with. Aside from virtual accessories, the only discernible difference between the two versions will be the color of the console; White for Final Fantasy and black for Splinter Cell.

Unfortunately, neither of the bundles will have any swish artwork or logos emblazoned on the console, making this more of an offer aimed at first time buyers, rather than eager collectors. Though, if coveting memorabilia is your jam, Square Enix has got you covered and will be releasing a limited quantity of Final Fantasy XIII faceplates when the game drops Mar. 9th.
